!NOTES:
The book by Hughes Spalding, THE SPALDING FAMILY IN AMERICA etc. ( seenotes
for Basil Spalding) asserts that Catherine Edelen could not have bee n the
daughter of Thomas and Comfort Edelin since Thomas' will does not mention any
children. However see the following indicating that the opposite i strue.
CLEMENTS-SPALDING AND ALLIED FAMILIES, by J. W. S. Clements; FHL 929.273 a1
No. 405 "His (John Spalding's) son Basil became a wealthy plante r inCharles
County, married Catharine Edelen, daughter of Thomas and Comfort Edel in,and
died testate in 1792"
The CHRONICLES OF ST. MARY'S, VOL. 6, pg. 196, FHL975.2b2S, "Basi lSpald-

Matthew (Henry) Mudd (1730-1810)."
See THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND, 1670 by Edward Felix Jenkins, O.S. A.at
page 63. The article is about Mary Aloysia Mahoney, daughter of Ann
Spalding Mahoney (1208), daughter of Thomas Spalding (1198) of Ann Jenkins
(100). It states "Mary Aloysia (Ally, Alusia) Mahoney, married about
1775, Henry Thomas Mudd, son of Henry (Matthew?) and Blanche (Spaldin g)Mudd of
Charles County." The article lists her 12 children.
Comment on Prodigy from Charmaine Welker, PRJF38C, Spalding expert :"This
is wrong. Thomas Edelen and Comfort Barnes had no children. This Catherine
is either a daughter or granddaughter of Comfort's by her 1st marriag e to
Patrick Dyer."

"Richard Edelen, born 1671 in St. Mary's County, Maryland, died 17 61in
Lanterman, Bryantown, Charles County, Maryland. He married (1) 1691 , in
Charles County, Maryland, Anna Maria Neale; he married (2) in 1694, in
Charles County, Maryland, Sarah Hagoe (Hagan)....Richard Edelen purch ased
and sold several large tracts of land during his lifetime but the purchase
of Lanterman from John Baptist Boarman on 12 Nov 1718 must have mad e the
greatest impact on his life as it remained in the Edelen family for several
generations. It also caused him to move from Prince George's Count ywhere
he owned several large tracts. Another tract in Charles County whic h he
owned by the name of "New York" lying on Back Creek on Cobb Neck in south-
ern Charles County also remained in the Edelen family for a number o fgener-
ations.
"His last dwelling plantation was "Askington" on the east side o f the
Zekiah Swamp near Newport, which was inherited by his grandson, Edwar d,son
of Edward, afterhis widow, Ann Craycroft, widow of Luke Gardiner, wa s de-
ceased. On this plantation the Edelen family had a chapel erected approx-
imately where St. Mary's Church at Newport now stands. This may be t he
location also of his internment, if he was not laid to rest at Lantermand,
also on the Zekiah near Bryantown. It is assumed that Ann Craycroft , his
widow, was interred with her first husband and the father of her children,
Luke Gardiner, in the family buriel plot at Warburton Manor."
