!NOTES:
See THE MATTINGLY FAMILY IN EARLY AMERICA by Herman E. Mattingly ,1975,
p. 44 (in an article on JAMES MATTINGLY d 1745, brother of Luke Mattingly)
"All the rest of the personal estate was equally divided between " my
other five children," Ann, Monica, Robert, Peter and John. Witnesse s to
the will who later proved it were John Sheircliffe, Jr., Peter Ford a nd
Clement Hill. Peter Ford was the brother of Anastasia who is supposed
to have married Luke Mattingly, brother of James (citing SMC, Md., Wi lls,
Liber 22, folio 239 (1735).
On page 53 is the article on Luke Mattingly for which see his fil e.
"It is speculation that sometime before 1735 Luke married Anastasia F ord,
daughter of Robert and Margaret. Her father in his will (cite below)
written December 27, 1735, mentioned his daughter, Anastasia Mattingl y.
Other connections with the Ford family, and the naming of his daughter
Anastasia, seems to confirm Luke's marriage to Anastasia Ford. If this
be so, Anastasia died sometime before 1744, since Luke married Prisci lla
Knott, widow of George Knott, on November 29, 1744.
(JS: I notice some discrepancies. Not only is it a coincidence t hat
Fr. Mattingly shows Luke as marrying Priscilla Knott on the same da ythat they submit the Accounting of Priscilla's late spouse, i.e. November 29,
1744, but the date of their marriage is supported by a citation to an
accounting. The date of their marriage is important because we hav eassumed
that Luke's daughter Elizabeth Mattingly, mother of Catherine Spaldin g,
was a daughter of Anastasia Ford Mattingly and was born ca 1746. I f Luke
married Priscilla in 1744, Elizabeth was Priscilla's daughter and no t a
Ford.)

Vol. 2, No. 11, Nov 1954:
Rose Hill by Charles E. Fenwick
If you should visit Leonardtown, Maryland and ask to see Rose Hill
few people would be able to direct you, for this old plantation is to day
known as St. Mary's Academy. As the town has grown, it has gathered
within its bounds part of this old plantation of about 300 acres...
Rose Hill is one tract of land which has not been lost. Most of i ts
acreage was part of Ford's Inclosure, which was originally patented to
John Ford on the 2nd of March, 1754. At that time, John Ford was sei zed
in fee simple, of several contiguous tracts and had them surveyed and
patented to him as Ford's Inclosure....Ford's Inclosure contained i n all
255 acres and was held of his Lordship's Manor of Beaverdam. John Fo rd
died in the year 1770 and in his will says "to my wife Henrietta Ford,
the plantation where I now live, called Ford's Inclosure, and at her
death to my sons, Robert and Joseph Ford." The records of an old bur ying
ground on Rose Hill seem to indicate that it was the site of his home.
Ford Inclosure was divided. Robert Ford, who called himself Robert
Ford, Court House, probably to distinguish himself from other Rober tFords,
received 145 acres and Joseph Ford received 110 acres. Joseph Ford' s 110
acres were divided into smaller tracts after his death, which occurred
prior to 1812. Robert Ford, Court House, died in 1808 and left his 1 45
acres undivided. Robert probably never married, as he leaves his property
to his nieces and nephews. He left Ford's Inclosure as follows: "t o my
nephew John F. Ford, son of my brother Joseph Ford, the Land and prem ises
whereon I now dwell, being part of a tract called Ford's Inclosure - -that
is the Land which fell to me by my father's will." For the next fe wyears
Ford's Inclosure is assessed to John F. Ford, but it contained no hou se
worthy of assessment.
(The property eventually was renamed Rose Hill and gifted by the o wner
in 1885, Colonel Richard H. Miles, some Catholic Institution of Learning.)
Colonel Miles and his wife lived to see their wish fulfilled, bu t died
soon after...The bequest of Colonel and Mrs. Miles had aroused intere st.
Several religious orders were contacted. The Sisters of Charity of
Nazareth, Kentucky, were interested and made plans to visit Leonardto wn.
In the spring of 1885, Mother Teresa Tormey, accompanied by Siste rMarie
Maynard visited Leonardtown. Their report must have been satisfactor yfor
their Order accepted this new task.
On August 27, 1885, the first band of four sisters arrived via ste am-
boat. They were Sisters Madeline, Rosanne, Gregorita, and Bertilla w ith
Mother Helena as their guide. They were, in a way, 'coming home' fo r the
first Mother Superior of their Order, Mother Mary Catherine Spalding , was
a descendant of Thomas Spalding of Saint Mary's County.
Reverend Father Charles K. Jenkins, S.J., who welcomed the Sister s to
Saint Mary's was himself a descendant of a prominent Maryland family . As
their own home was not ready, Mr. George Combs invited them to stay at
Buena Vista until all was in readiness." (The article continues to re cord
the opening of St. Mary's Academy on Rose Hill on Sept 6, 1885. It continued
in operation as of the date the article was published.)
Thus there were three ancestors from three lines of the Sparks fam ily
involved in the creation of St. Mary's Academy, John Ford, Mother Mary
Catherine Spalding, and Fr. Charles K. Jenkins, S.J.

It is likely that this John is not the child of Henrietta Ford. In

"My children by my last wife to wit: Philip, Robert, Joseph, Anne,
Margaret and Eleanor." Also, a note at the foot of the will dated 23

to my mother-in-law, Henrietta Ford (probably meaning step-mother) and
declare I shall not act as executor thereof. Signed: John Ford, Jr."
See THOMAS JENKINS, pg 301 where Father Jenkins says "John Ford, S r.
born probably in the mid 1690's was a planter in St. Mary's County . He
had one child, John Ford, Jr., by his first marriage about 1716; his
wife's name unknown. He married (2) or (3) about 1746/48 Henrietta Neale,
daughter of Henry Neale and Anne Gardiner and descendant of Captain J ames
Neale, Lord of the Manor of "Wollaston", Charles County. They had six
children. Their third child and son, Captain Joseph Ford, was a sold ier
of the Revolution and received a U.S. pension. After the Revolution ,Captain
Joseph Ford established a successful shipyard in Leonardtown on the C reek
back of the Manor House, which was still in operation in 1812."
