I received an email from Linda Cheeks Pittano (Chico1226@aol.com) on 5Jan 2000, and again on 18 Jan, 2000. She advised that she is relatedto Lilbourn Everett Sparks (1890-1971), that he was married to HattieHaywood (1895-1948), that among their eight children was a daughter,Emma Merl who was married to Clyde Logan. Emma Merl, still living, told Mrs. Pittano that her grandparents were John "Possom" Sparks andSarah Rebecca Gray. Mrs. Pittano speculated that the John Sparks whomarried Rebecca Gray referred to in the article appearing in THESPARKS QUARTERLY, is very likely the John "Possom" Sparks married toSarah Rebecca Gray. The known dates also lend credence to herspeculation. I have entered these names based solely on thatconjecture and will add substantiation when and if it is obtained.spouse: Sparks, William Henderson (1861 - 1918)

I also received an email from Daryll Sparks on July 23, 2004, with thefollowing information:
Sarah Rebecca Sparks
First Wife of John Jackson Sparks
April 30, 1864 - May23, 1900
Sarah Rebecca has been documented with two different last names. Atone time she lived next to William Henderson Sparks, while they werecourting they had a child out of wed-lock (Samuel Justin Sparks bornin 1881). Later in 1887 records show her as Sarah Rebecca Cox whomarried John Jackson Sparks. They had the following Children: Sherman,Everett, Eddie, Jan, Viola, Lucy. She only lived a few weeks after herlast child Eddie was born. I just recently found out that Sarah'sparents were. Her mother was Amelia Annis (Cox) Mauk born Nov.30,1841, her father was John Wesley Gray who was a travelingbusinessman who was a drifter. Later Amelia married Frederick (Fed)Mauk in 1860. Sarah took her mothers maiden name before she marriedJohn Jackson, which was the reason she is listed as Sarah Cox in 1887. June of 2004 we took my dad Marshall Sparks (son of Sherman Sparks)to see if we could find were his grandmother Sarah was buried in Maukridge cemetery. We did find the cemetery and also learned afterspeaking with some of the local folks, the cemetery and the landaround it was the same farm dad's father (Sherman) and grandfather(John Jackson) had lived on at one time. In researching the names inthe cemetery we have been able to trace the different relationshipsbetween the Sparks, Mauk and Cox families.

From the 1830 census it appearsthat Samuel and Rachel were also the parents of another son (born1820-25); and three additional daughters (born 1810-20; 1820-25; and1825-30). None of these appear on the 1850 census or in Samuel's Will,so it is presumed that they possibly died young or moved away).

"There was a John Griggs who was a resident of Orange County, Virginiain the 1740s. I was told this by a researcher that he was probablythe father of at least one son, Minus Griggs. John had some problemswith the sheriff who chased him off his (?) land with a rifle. MinusGriggs married Jane (- - - -) and they were married residents ofOrange County in the 1740's. They were both witnesses to a legaldocument in that time period. We can assume that Minus's birth datewould probably be around 1720 or before, which would make Johnprobably sometime in the late 1600's.
"Minus and Jane Griggs moved to Granville County, North Carolina. Wefind first mention of him here on October 28, 1751 as a witness to aland grant of Philemon Bradford near the Tarr River. On October 25,1753, he received a grant of 328 acres on both sides of the TarrRiver. He sold this land on December 4, 1753, to John Landess, lateof Pennsylvania, for £65 current Virginia currency. At this timeMinus was described as a planter and was of St. John's Parish. OnNovember 4, 1753, Minus had received a 623 acre land grant on bothsides of Aaron's Creek.
"Minus served under Captain Andrew Hampton as he is listed on theGranville County muster role of the militia on October 8, 1754. Apossible brother, Leonard Griggs, was listed on this muster roll inCaptain Richard Coleman's company. Both companies were under Col. Wm.Eaton. Nothing else is know of this Leonard Griggs, but Minus had agrandson by the same name.
"The last record of Minus Griggs was from an unpublished Will datedOctober 7, 1760 and proved February 10, 1761." (See above) "TheHamptons were neighbors of Minus Griggs, and his daughter Jane namedJennie Griggs married Ezekiel Hampton. He was born in 1735 in OrangeCounty, Virginia, and died in 1811 at Jack's Creek, Yancy County,North Carolina.
"An Elizabeth Griggs [was] married in Granville County, NorthCarolina, on December 19, 1775, to Benjamin Peeler, so [she] maypossibly be one of the unnamed daughters in the Will. Elizabeth diedbefore 1793 and Benjamin died after November, 1799. He was a son ofChristian Peeler, and was born around 1750 in Orange County, NorthCarolina.

They lived in Boone and Montgomery County and theother went north to Adams County, Illinois. It is rather difficult tokeep them identified s to who was who until the 1850 census.
