DEATH TAKES IRA PAULUS ISON
"It is with deep regret that we report the death of a charter memberof the Association, Ira Paulus Ison, who passed away on August 7, 1986,at his home at Stephens, Kentucky. He was born on December 13, 1885, inElliott County Kentucky, and was a son of Andrew Jackson and Hannah(Creech) Ison. He was a retired school teacher and farmer. His wife,Nancy, preceeded hinm in death.
"Mr. Ison is survived by five daughters, Vesta White, Jackson, Ohio;Pauline Bentley and Claudia Mitchell, both of Columbus, Ohio; LoreneRiggs, Zanesville, Ohio; and Madeline Johnson, Stephens; two sons:Wendell Ison, Columbus, Ohio, and Milo Ison, Stephens. Four sons: GlenIson, Waldo Ison, Quenton Ison, and Berdine Ison preceded him in death.
"Ira Ison was a most capable amateur genealogist and local historian.When the Sparks Family Association was founded in 1953, he was theauthority to whom we turned to unravel the tangled relationships of allof the Sparkses who had come from North Carolina to north-easternKentucky about 1821. He will be remembered for his keen memory andgenealogical knowldege. We extend our sympathy to his family."

"Nelson Ison, son of Ira and Sina (Sparks) Ison, was born about 1838.He was probably named for his mother's brother, Nelson Sparks. He was 21years old when he was enumerated with his parents when the 1860 censuswas taken of Morgan County, Kentucky. We have found no other record ofhim."

He had been born about 1834 and was a sonof Howard Adldns. Brack and Sarah lived on the Right Fork of NewcombeCreek where they reared seven children. "John Wilbur Sparks, son of Thomas and Catherine (Jayne) Sparks, wasborn on March 18 1846, in Johnson County (KY). He was married to NancyJane Jackson on June 5, 1870 in Boyd County. She had been born on April7, 1847, and was a daughter of ----- and Elizabeth (Thompson) Jackson.According to a descendant, John Wilbur and his brother, Henry, bought 400acres of timberland in Lewis County and moved there about 1870. NancyJane died there on March 31, 1905; John Wilbur died sometime after 1900.They had six children."

"The present porch and the two rooms at the rear are later, thoug hold. In spite of romance the pent has no cellar-way or trap door a ndwas not used in Indian attacks. The oldest brick walls are only n ineinches thick.
"`Long Lane' was built by Lt. Col. John Jarboe of Dijon who died i n1674. He was the Lord High Sheriff of St. Mary's County. The hous e waslater owned by the Carrolls." The dimensions were Overall 30 ' 10" by30' 4". Grade to floor, 39. Floor to cornice, 7' 3". Ceil ing, 9' 5".Sill, 2' 0". Panes 8" by 10". Wall, 9'."
