apprenticed him to a Baltimore saddler, and in 1796 he went into business
for himself. His business, importing, making and selling saddlery, harness
and hardware, grew to be a very big one. In 1814 Edward was one of the de-
fenders of Baltimore. On February 15, 1803, (Citing Baltimore Federal Gaz-
ette, February 16, 1803) he was married by Father Beeston to Ann Spalding,

Jenkins as his son-in-law. He makes Edward Jenkins and Basil Spalding Elder,
whom he calls his partner, but who was also his nephew, the executor sof his
estate. He makes Basil Spalding Elder the sole guardian of his mino rchild-
ren (they were all minors).
"In 1831 Edward Jenkins was succeeded in business by his son, Aust in. He

Felix Jenkins, born in Baltimore, Oct 11 a825, the eldest son. A s aboy he knew Edgar Allen Poe who was a friend of his father. Feli xJenkins was one of the most respected physicians of Baltimore an d aloyal member of the Cathedral parish. He was a trustee of the Cathedral and the personal physician of Cardinal Gibbons.
Felix Jr., was a student in St. Mary's College, Baltimore, for si xyears, graduating in 1844 with the degree of Master of Arts. In 18 45he began "reading medicine" in the office of Dr. Dunbar in Baltimo re,and in 1850 received the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Maryland. From 1848 to 1850 he was also a part-time instructor at St. Mary's College. He practiced medicine for fifty year sin Baltimore, retiring in 1900.
He married on May 7, 1861, a distant cousin Nancy (Ann) (Spalding )Jenkins, daughter of William Spalding and Verlinda (Lilly) Jenkin s ofConewago, Pennsylvania. She was distantly related to him in a v erycomplex way which is beyond me to figure out, since both of her parents were related to each other and to both of his, who were also related to each other. They were married at the Sacred Heart Church in Conewago, PA. Felix and Nancy Jenkins lived directly across the street from the Cathedral. Mrs. Nancy Jenkins died November 2, 1904, aged 71.
From then to 1909, Dr. Jenkins continued to live at 400 Cathedra lStreet with his youngest son, Benjamin, who on Jun 7, 1905, marrie dmarie Clarke of Scranton, PA, to live with his family, and Dr. Jenkins went to the home of his daughter, Emily, at Towson, in Baltimor eCounty. He was there only a few weeks when he died October 9, 1909 ,two days before his 84th birthday. (His children named on pps 99-1 00were Felix Samuel, Sarah Lilly, Frances Helen, Mary Emily, Benjami nWheeler, and Samuel Lilly Jenkins.

Charles County, MD. George Jenkins was Ann (Luckett) Adderson's sec-
ond husband. Ann Luckett's first husband was Jeremiah Adderton of
Charles County, whom she married in or before 1738. In 1738 Thomas
Hussy Luckett conveyed to his daughter Ann and her husband Jeremiah
Adderton, for love and natural affection, land, et al., at Chinquamuxon.
Thomas Hussy Luckett died intestate in Charles County in 1767, when
letters of administration were issued to his son, William Rhody Luckett
(husband of Mary Ann Semmes (1366) who was the daughter of Henrietta
(Jenkins) Semmes (93)). On Jul 11, 1767, an inventory of his effect swas
filed. George Jenkins (96) and John Jenkins (81) signed as next-of-kin.
On Dec 1, 1769, the proceeds were distributed to the three heirs: William
Rhody Luckett, Elizabeth (Mrs. John) Jenkins and Ann (Mrs. George) Jen-
kins; Henry Hagan and Thomas Semmes, bondsmen. Mrs Ann (Luckett) (Adder-
ton) Jenkins predeceased her husband. If she and George had any children
they must have died in childhood because in his will of 21 Jun, 1775,
probated in Charles County, 17 Aug, 1775, George Jenkins leaves his estate
to his sister Harriet Simm's three sons Thomas, Edward 7 Marmaduke; his
brother John's three sons Thomas, George & John (and others). George's
wife, Ann Luckett, was the sister of Elizabeth Luckett who married
George's brother John Jenkins (81)."

!NOTES:
THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND, 1670 by Edward Felix Jenkins, OSA, pp s22-3:
"Henrietta, born March 7, 1753, died in Charles County 1828. Sh e was
still unmarried when her father wrote his will on April 13, 1782, bu tsome-
time after that she married Edward Wheeler of Charles County who die din
1821. It is a family tradition that Henrietta married a Wheeler an dhad
no children (Browne-Jenkins Family Tree). Both Henrietta and her husband
died testate and without issue. Edward Wheeler, in his will of Marc h25,
1817, probated in Charles County, Aug 4, 1821 (Liber HB No. 14, Foli o150)
leaves "one feather bed and furniture" to my niece Elizabeth Wheeler ,daugh-
ter to Josias and Barbary Wheeler, and everything else to "my belove dwife,
Henrietta," to dispose of as she should choose. Madam Henrietta Wheeler,
who was somewhat of a capitalist, wrote a really splendid will in which
she leaves her bank stock to two nephews, six nieces, her sister Mar yand
the Catholic Church. She calls her married nieces and her sister b ytheir
married names, viz.: nieces: Mary Heard Jenkins (unmarried); Grace Davis,
Henrietta Jameson, Eleanor Edelen, Harriet Clarke, Henrietta Kirk, and
her sister Mary Pye. The two nephews she mentions are Henry Jenkin sand
John J. Jenkins.
Henrietta's will was written July 29, 1822, and was probated in Charles
County June 11, 1823 (Liber HB, No. 14 F, p. 265). These names all har-
monize in a very interesting way with tradition and are found in on eform
or another on the Browne-Jenkins Family Tree. Mary Heard Jenkins i san
unmarried daughter of George, Henrietta's brother, whose first wife was
Mary Heard.

"HENRY JENKINS - Born 1736. All the various family trees and articles
about members of the Jenkins family (Citing COLONIAL FAMILIES OF TH EUNITED
STATES OF AMERICA, Volume 4, page 260 and elsewhere) say that Henry and
William, sons of William and Mary (Courtney) Jenkins, emigrated to K Yabout
1740. Possibly they merely acquired land in KY for their children because
both seem to have passed their lives in St. Mary's County, where the yboth
died - Henry intestate. In a deposition of July 22, 1762, Henry gav ehis
age as 26 and stated at the same time he was the son of William Jenkins.
Letters of Administration upon Henry's estate were issued to his widow, Ann
Jenkins, who was appointed administrator. On Oct 27, 1789, she gav ean acc-
ount of the administration of his estate. (Citing "Balance and Distribution,

405/9/4, of which the widow Ann received her third, and each of the seven
children 38/12/3.

The will of John Jenkins, son of George, dated June 2,1769 , was probated in Charles County on August 10, 1769. The finalaccount of the settlement of his estate was filed December 18, 1772.The will mentions eight children and also another daughter, Sarah, andnames the unborn child as Elizabeth. The final account also says thatthe widow has married Samuel Green, and that the daughters Monica andSarah are of age, and all the other children are minors. John's sons,Thomas, John, and Edward, are also mentioned in the will of theiruncle George Jenkins (June 21, 1775) and were then still minors.

"John Jenkins owned the estate "Linseys" (165 acres) and "Stone'sRest" (123.5 acres) on the Avon River. I think that Samuel Green, thesecond husband of Mrs. Elizabeth (Luckett Jenkins, must have been aresident of Frederick County, or at least must have taken her and heryounger children up there to live after their marriage. This wouldexplain the arriage of the two daughters, Mary Ann and Elizabeth, toFrederick County men, and make it probable that John Jenkins whomarried Eleanor Compton of Frederick County on July 26, 1794, was Johnof John (81), of George (91)."

!NOTES:
The following reference to the marriage of John I. Jenkins was located
on FHL 985191 consisting of miscellaneous genealogy folders. This one
concerns the Plowden family. Sir Edmund Plowden applied to Charles I
before July 1632 for a Charter to New Alton, now New Jersey, under the
great seal of Ireland and such was granted to him June 21, 1634. Under
this charter Plowden was created Earl of Albion. For various reasons,
the charter was never enforced.
A decendant, Edmund Plowden was married to Jane Hammersley on 5 De c,
1779. She died 11 Feb 1804 at Bushwood in Charles County, MD, and he
followed on 20 Apr, 1804. Children were George, Elizabeth, Mary Ann,
and Edmund.
"Mary Ann Plowden was born on the 6th of October, 1784 and was married
to John I. Jenkins on the 22nd of February, 1808 at Bushwood. She died
the 27th day of June, 1827 at Clamber Hill, near Port Tobacco, Charles
County, MD., aged 42 years 8 months and 21 days, leaving children:
Caroline, George, Jane, Edmund, Margaret, Cecilia, and John William Jenkins."

NOTES:

See THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND 1670 written by Edward Felix JenkinsO.S.A., which lists this family on pages 75 and 76 as fifth generationdescendants of Thomas Jenkins. Referring to John R. Jenkins as thesubject he was "born Mar 9, 1814, in Nelson County, KY, and died in1879 in Union County, KY. He was buried in the Sacred Heart Cemeteryat St . Vincent, (Church Cemetary, New Hope,) KY. On Oct 2, 1837, hemarried Theresa Payne (citing: Will, L. AH No. 9, Folio 299, CharlesCounty) born 20 Dec 1820 in Nelson County and died Oct 14, 1897, atNew Hope, Kentucky. Mrs. Theresa (Payne) Jenkins died at the home ofher son, The Rev. Thomas Jefferson Jenkins, then pastor of theCatholic Church at New Hope. The same tombstone in the St. Vincent dePaul Cemetary at New Hope carries the record of both Father Jenkinsand his mother. On the side of the stone appears the followinginscription: "Pray for the Soul of Teresa P. Jenkins, December 20,1820-October 14, 1897, The Venerable Mother of Father Jenkins."

The death of Mrs. Jenkins was entered by her son, Father Jenkins , inthe Parish Register of Interments in the following words (original inlatin, translation follows):
October 14, 1897, on the Vigil of St. Teresa at 12 noon, Teresa PayneJenkins, my most beloved mother, moved to a higher place, age 79.Signed Thomas J. Jenkins. The administrator of the parish, TheReverend B. H. Harttage, wrote to Mrs. F. X. Wathen on Mar 26, 1949:"There is a discrepancy of two ears; however, I would be more inclinedto hold to the age of 79 as recorded in the death notice, as thatentire record is written by Father Jenkins."

In UNION COUNTY KENTUCKY GENEALOGY VOL 2, (see cite under Robert A.Stone) it states that James W. Jenkins sponsored Robert A. Stone athis baptism July 1, 1878. There is no James W. Jenkins shown eitheras a son of John nor as his brother. He was probably the son of oneof
John's seven brothers. The marriage of John R. Jenkins to TeresaPayne was one of three marriages within the same two families. John'sbrother Clement married Teresa' s sister Elizabeth and John's sisterElizabeth Henrietta married Teresa's brother Hillory Payne.

See also GARDINER, GENERATIONS AND RELATIONS, by Thomas RichardGardiner, Vol I, pg. 172:

"John R. Jenkins, born 9 Mar 1816 in Nelson County, Kentucky; died1879 in Union County, Kentucky." (JJS: Here Mr. Gardiner includes areference to an early marriage of John Jenkins which is inexplicable. He gives no date of marriage or name of spouse. He later states thatJohn R. Jenkins married Theresa Payne in 1837 in Springfield,Washington County, Kentucky, yet he states that the six children ofthis "first" marriage were born commencing in 1840 and continuinguntil 1852. He continues by stating that the children of John andTheresa were John Thomas, born in 1842, the same year that JosephRichard was born by John R.'s "first marriage", and Joseph Williamborn in 1852 -- who is also shown as one of the six children of Johnand Theresa!! It is likely that this error resulted from some sort ofcomputer error on Mr. Gardiner's part. It is noted that the names ofthe first six children, including Joseph William Jenkins are notpreceeded by a + which indicates that Mr. Gardiner does not intend tofollow those people any further in his book. The last two names, purporting to be the children of John and Theresa, are preceeded by a+, including the name [again] of Joseph William Jenkins. A possibleconclusion is that the data processor confused an instruction tofollow the last two children marked with a + with a belief that theywere the only issue of a second marriage, that to Theresa Payne. Weare certain that Father Thomas Jefferson Jenkins was the son of JohnR. Jenkins and Theresa (Payne) Jenkins as evidenced by the aboveburial information provided by Father Felix Jenkins in his book.)

HISTORY OF UNION COUNTY, 1886. Evansville, IN. Courier Co., Printers,Binders and Engravers, FHL 976.9885 H2h, published 1868; ppg 238-240:

"JOHN THOMAS S. JENKINS, M.D. was born near Springfield, WashingtonCounty, KY, on what was known as the old Jackson farm, on the fifthday of March, 1842. The Jackson who owned this farm was a brother ofthe Jackson who killed Col. Ellsworth at Baltimore Junction, MD., atthe beginning of the war. Our subjects early education was gainedfrom the private schools of Springfield, and completed at theCovington Institute, an institution at that time of high educationalrank. Having finished his education, he went to Louisville andentered the drug house of Thomas E. Jenkins & Co., his father being apartner. Thomas E. Jenkins was the leading partner, and was a chemistand druggist of pronounced and ack-
nowledged ability. Our subject commenced in the laboratory andpharmaceutical department, and was afterward placed in charge of theprescription department. He remained with this firm for thirteenyears, and, during a portion of that time, studied medicine, with theview of practicing it as his chosen profession. Having severed hisconnection with the Louisville firm, of which his father and unclewere partners, he then went, in 1865, to Atlanta, GA., and engaged inthe drug business in that city until 1868, at which time he came toUnion County.

"The subject of this sketch is a man of fine native mind, and this, coupled with a close application to his studies, brought him to thefront as a young student in every way qualified to master whatever hewas disposed to undertake. He fully determined, in his own mind, uponthe course of his life. He, in 1869, went to Louisville, and thereattended a thorough course of lectures in the Louisville MedicalCollege. In the following year 1870, he graduated with honor tohimself and credit to the college.
He then returned to Union County and began the practice of medicine, and has continued to do so to this day. Dr. Jenkins is a physician ofhigh standing in the profession, and is held in high regard by hiscolleagues. He is a man of strong mind, well read in thetechnicalities of his profession, and fully and amply equipped for anydisease he undertakes to heal.

On the tenth day of May, 1864, he married Miss Alethea Ann Payne, daughter of John Payne, of Union County, a lady of many social gracesand personal acquirements, and, by this marriage, seven children havebeen born, six of whom are living, namely: Henrietta Emily, JohnRobert, William Hudson,
Thomas Jefferson, Mary Teresa and Joseph Mary. A bright family, whogather around the hearthstone in joy and gladness, and sing the songsof the ages while the good father and mother listen and love devotedlythe offspring of their happy marital day. In this there is love andgladness, joy and
hope.

Dr. Jenkins was never an office seeker or office holder, yet he has attimes taken an active interest in political matters, and his influencehas been felt by both sides. He is firm in his opinions and inunflinchinginly expressing them. When he is for a man, that settlesit, he is emphatically for him. He is a true friend - every impluseof his heart is warm, and full of sympathy for the afflicted anddistressed, and no man or doctor will go further to do a good deedthan he. He was born and baptised a Catholic, and, from the time hebecame of sufficient age to reason for himself up to the present, hehas lived a consistant Catholic life, devoted to his Church and itsteachings. In 1873 there was organized in
this district a medical society, called and known as the McDowellMedical Society, and, at its organization, our subject was electedSecretary and served two terms. At Hopkinsville, in 1881, Dr. Jenkinswas elected President, and served with distinction and credit tohimself. He is a brilliant young physician, enjoys a large practice, and is deservedly very popular."

Also on page 642: "The physician next in succession was Dr. J. T .Jenkins from Louisville, his wife being Allie Payne, daughter of JohnPayne and Jane Spaulding. He moved from here to Uniontown."

See THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND 1670 by Edward Felix Jenkins, O.S.A. atpage 105 for an article on Dr. Jenkins. It points out that he and hiswife Alethea A. Payne are buried in the Sacred Heart Cemetary in St.Vincent's (??), Kentucky. (I can find no St. Vincent's Kentucky.Father Jenkins Thomas Jefferson Jenkins was pastor and he and hismother Teresa (Payne) Jenkins are buried at St. Vincent de PaulCemetary in New Hope Nelson County, Kentucky. I believe, however, that Dr. Jenkins lived in Union County, Kentucky. Could there be twoSt. Vincents?)

[JS: See notes for Raphael.] For example, on Jul 7, 1824, he and his wife, Matilda Semmes of Georgetown, conveyed to Lewis A. "MICHAEL JENKINS - Born February 25, 1778. He was probably apprenticed
to a cabinet maker as a boy, for in 1799 at the age of 21 he established
his own furniture and cabinet business on Light Street in Baltimore .He and
his sons became famous for their fine furniture. He joined the Firs tCom-

battles of Bladensburg and North Point. (Citing THE JENKINS FAMILY O FMARY-
LAND, privately published in 1906 by Michael Jenkins of Baltimore. Com-
piled by his wife, Mary Isabel (Plowden) Jenkins and their cousin Ambrosia
Faxon, (Mrs. Eben Faxon of Baltimore).) After his death on Septembe r8, 1832,
his son Anthony succeeded to his business.
"It was inevitable that a cabinet maker would make, among other things,
coffins, which certainly are cabinets of a sort. From this develope dthe
famous undertaking firm of Henry W. Jenkins, Funeral Directors, established
by Michael's son Henry. This is probably the oldest undertaking establishment
in the United States.
"Michael Jenkins married on January 8, 1806, Ann Worthington, of Balti-

the 4th generation of his family to direct the undertaking firm, die dNov-

"The following history of the descendants of Michael Jenkins is ba sed
on the Browne-Jenkins Family Tree, old records of the Wheeler family ,and
(principally) on data compiled by David Wheeler Jenkins (ca. 1870-1958) of
Baltimore. He sent it to his cousin, Mrs. Rachel (Mifflin) Ullman o fBeth-

"Michael Jenkins, son of Michael (1736-1802) and Charity Ann (Wheeler)
Jenkins of Long Green, Baltimore county, born February 25, 1778, an ddied
in Baltimore September 8, 1832. On January 8, 1806, he married Ann Worth-

!NOTES:
THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND 1670 by Edward Felix Jenkins, O.S.A. p g30:
"MICHAEL C. JENKINS - Born in St. Mary's County, December 12, 1736 .In
1787 he settled at Long Green, Baltimore County, on a 900 acre plantation
bequeathed to him by his brother, Thomas Courtney Jenkins, who had died that
year. On December 21, 1761, Michael married Charity Ann Wheeler, born about
1743, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Scott) Wheeler of Baltimore County.
Michael and Charity Jenkins lived and died in their home at Long Green,
Michael died January, 1802 and Charity died November 10, 1820. (Citing
Federal Gazette, Baltimore, MD, Friday, November 10, 1820.) They ar eburied
in the Jenkins lot in the churchyard at St. John the Evangelist at Long Green
together with at least 29 of their descendants, many more of whom ar eburied
in the cemetery outside the lot. The cemetery is still used by the family
and is very interesting. Michael's will of March 10, 1797, proved in
Baltimore County on January 27, 1802, mentions his widow, Charity an dten
children. The widow and his son Thomas Courtney Jenkins, are named as ex-
ecutors. The will was witnessed by Clement Green, Cornelius Donnally, and
Isaac Ford.
"Michael and Charity Jenkins have many descendants; they had forty-one
known grandchildren and one hundred fifty-one known great-grandchildren.
The dates of Michael's birth, marriage, and the birthdates of his child-
ren are taken from an article on Michael Jenkins of Baltimore. (Citing
Mackenzie, COLONIAL FAMILIES IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Vol. IV, pp
260-261. The ultimate source is the 200-year-old Long Green Record Book
of Michael Jenkins, now in the possession of Mr. Thomas Courtney Jenkins
of Owings Mills, Baltimore County, MD. Some of the dates come from tomb-
stone inscriptions from the churchyard behind the Church of St. Joh nthe
Evangelist, Long Green, Baltimore County, MD.)
"The book is very interesting. On the first page, in a fine larg ehand
is written "Michael C. Jenkins, his book." It contains mostly farm records,
but also "Michael's Family Record," all in his own handwriting, and the
"Family Record" of his son, Josias down to about 1840.
"Mass at Long Green was originally said in the parlor of Michael' shome
by a priest who probably came from a farm the Jesuits had on Deer Creek in
Harford County (erected from Baltimore County in 1773). this farm was
bought by the Jesuits in 1743 as a center for their missionary work in Bal-
timore County. The farm house, called Priest Neale's Mass House, i sstill
standing. After 1792, the priest probably came from St. Ignatius' Church
at Hickory, Harford County, which is also still in use. St. Ignatius'
Church was built by the Wheeler family, to which Michael's wife belonged.
The first Catholic Church at Long Green was dedicated to St. John th eEvan-
gelist and was consecrated May 18, 1822. It was known as St. John' son
the Ridge and was located about one and one-half miles northwest of the
present church. It burned down February 25, 1855, along with all th eparish
records. The cornerstone of the second church of St. John the Evangelist
was laid July 22, 1855, and the first mass was celebrated in it December
30th of the same year. Baltimore County land records state that Edward F.
Jenkins (son of Edward, son of Michael) and Sarah (the wife of Josias, son
of Michael) sold Archbishop Kendrick two acres for $5.000 on Novembe r20,
1855. The church is still in use, although its position as parish church
was taken by a much larger modern church also dedicated to St. John the Evan-
gelist November 2, 1969. The second church was built right next to the first."

Jenkins, Thomas (1642 - <1727) - male
b. 1642 in Lyn Castle Angle, Wales, England

father: Jenkins, William Jason (1615 - )
Sixth Great-grandfather of James Joseph Sparks

See THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND 1670 by Edward Felix Jenkins, O.S.A .on the life of Thomas and his decendants. It starts on page 1:

"It is a family tradition (JJS: which is seriously questioned by otherwriters in the appendix) that our progenitor, Thomas Jenkins, was theson of William Jason Jenkins of Anglesey, Wales, who was the youngerbrother of Sir Lionel (Leoline or Llewllyn) Jenkins, who was firstLord of the Admiralty under Charles II and a friend of William Penn.As far as I know, there are no documents to prove this. See JenkinsFamily Origin (in appendix) for discussion.

"All of the branches of our Jenkins family are descended from a youngman named Thomas Jenkins, who came to Maryland with his wife Ann,in1669 or 1670. This is well established by the following Land Granton record at Annapolis:
November 15, 1670, came Thomas Jenkins, of Charles County,
Maryland, and proved his rights to 100 acres of land for
transporting himself and wife Ann into the Province, to in-
habit, A.D. 1670.

"On December 20, 1670, his wife Ann joined him in a deed, and at thetime a warrant was issued in the name of Thomas Jenkins for 100 acresof land "for transporting himself and his wife, Ann, into the Provinceto inhabit", he obtained by purchase 400 acres of plantation calledSt. Thomas' Manor. After this we have numerous realestatetransactions in which Thomas Jenkins bought or sold land.

"On November 20, 1674, he obtained by deed from George Shens(Shentone?) of Charles County, 200 acres called Pinnar. In 1677 hewitnessed a purchase of land by John Hanson. (Charles County Gentry, page 221, by Harry Wright Newman). In 1680 he was in possession of a100 acre tract - Poplar Point. In 1682 he bought three tracts ofland, 625 acres, from Charles Pye: Lynis, 150 acres; St. Thomas, 150
acres; Pye's Hardship, 325 acres.

"In November, 1682 he was assessed 180 pounds of tobacco (taxes). "OnFebruary 15, 1719, Thomas and Ann Jenkins assigned to Edward Edelin,"Pinnar," in Prince George's County "for the love which theyheld fortheir daughter, Elizabeth Edelin, wife of said Edward". (CharlesCounty Gentry, page 173, by Harry Wright Newman).

"Frequently he and his wife, Ann, witnessed wills; and he administeredestates. Twice he was a witness in law suits, on which occasions hemade age depositions: in February, 1686, he swore that he was 44, andin 1721 that he was 79 years old. Finally, we have his will ofNovember 1, 1726, probated in Charles County, October 31, 172 7, inwhich he refers to all the land he bought and mentions his wife Ann,and all of his children by name; and we have Ann's will of June 25,1729, probated in Charles County December 3, 1729, followed by thedistribution of their estate in 1731, when all the heirs appeared andsigned for their shares. (Testamentary proceedings, Liber 21, folio2)." [See also Index of Maryland Colonial Wills 1634-1777 in the Hallof Records, Annapolis, Md., Compiled by J. M. Magruder, p. 259: 1729,Thomas Jenkins, Charles County, Book 19, pg 251.]

"Thomas and Ann Jenkins lived in Charles County for nearly sixtyyears. Their children married into the leading Catholic families ofthe province and had many children of their own, who also marriedCatholics and reared Catholic families.

"Thomas Jenkins' will mentions 575 acres. According to tradition, hehad a brother, Michael, born about 1644, and also other brothers andsisters in Maryland. The court records in the settlement of hisestate refer to "representatives of the widow and several brothers andsisters of the deceased", whose names were unknown to the office.(Michael O. Jenkins Manuscript. Maryland Historical Society).

"Ambrosia Faxon (see Appendix - Jenkins family origin by ReverendEdward F. Jenkins) says that "records in the possession of some of thefamily" prove that he was married in 1669 or 1670, shortly after hisarrival in Maryland, to Ann Spalding of Virginia. She says therecords show that the marriage was performed in St. Mary's City byFather Altham, S.J. Something is wrong here. They may well have beenmarried in St. Mary's City in 1669 but not by Father Altham S.J.because the famous Father Altham had then been long in his grave.

"That Ann's maiden name was Spalding is a family tradition at least150 years old, as it was written by Henry Jenkins (1781-1869) into hisfamily Bible record about 1810. I have read the family record in thisstill existing Bible. It was, in 1959, in possession of Henry'sgreat-granddaughter, Mrs. Beverly (Ruth Jenkins) Bristor of Towson,Maryland. I have not tried to prove this marriage, but such an effortwas made about 60 years ago by the late Mrs. Samuel T. (Lydia B.)Brown of Baltimore. Mrs. Brown, a
genealogist of some note and the wife of one of Henry Jenkins'grandsons, said she found proof "in old court records" that thismarriage was performed in St. Mary's City in 1669 or 1670. It is veryunfortunate she gave no citation but if she found the record it shouldbe possible to find it again. Henry Jenkins (1781-1869) was the sonof Captain Thomas Jenkins (1751-1821), the son of William Jenkins(1714- 1782), the son of George Jenkins (1675-1727), the son of ThomasJenkins (1642-1727). Captain Thomas Jenkins, Henry's father, (andgreat-greatgrandfather of the Rev. Edward Felix Jenkins, author ofTHOMAS JENKINS OF MD.) had ample opportunity to learn the familyhistory from his own father, aunts and uncles, many of whom must haveknown both Thomas and Ann Jenkins, the pioneers.

"The land-grant giving Thomas Jenkins 100 acres of land "fortransporting himself and wife Ann into the province to inhabit" doesnot contradict the tradition that Ann was from Virginia, since thegrant does not say where either she or Thomas came from. He couldhave come from Wales directly to Virginia, where he could have mether, and then have brought her ot St. Mary's City so they could bemarried by a priest.

"Edward Spalding and his wife Margaret, and two children, and EdmundSpalding, who may have been his brother, were living inElizabethtown, Virginia, in February, 1623 (reportedly taken from acensus record). They are believed to have come from England in 1619.About 1642 Edward and Margaret Spalding and two children, then grown, went up to Massachusetts where they became the ancestors of the verynumerous Protestant Spalding family of New England. According to ourfamily tradition, Thomas' wife, Ann Spalding, was a granddaughter ofthis Edward by a son left behind in Virginia. This may not be true, but there is nothing improbable about it. My experience with familytraditions is that they always contain some truth and are generallymore right than wrong.

"Thomas Jenkins died in 1727 at the age of 85. His will datedNovember 1, 1727, was probated in Charles County. Ann died two yearslater at the age of about 80. Her will of June 25, 1729, was probatedin Charles County, December 3, 1729. They were both buried in St.Ignatius' Churchyard, Charles County, Maryland. It is now impossibleto find their graves."

In the Introduction, after stating that the first chapel was builtfrom an abandoned bark hut on an estuary called St. Mary's River in1649 and further asserting that St. Mary's County was where AmericanCatholicism began, he adds in the fifth paragraph:

" The unsung heroes are the plain people. And so it was with theCatholics of St. Mary's County, mostly farmers whose roots in Americareached back to almost the beginning of their state. Such immigrantancestors as John Cissell, Cuthbert Fenwick, Richard Gardiner, JohnGreenwell, Fra ncis Hayden, Thomas Howard, John Tarboe, ThomasJenkins, Thomas Mattingly , John Medley, Peter Mills, Thomas Spalding, and Robert Thompson were all there before the "Glorious Revolution"brought an end to the Catholic phase of the Colony. Each of themproduced a mighty progeny. A sampling of other catholic names thatwould constitute St. Mary's legacy to the country at large wouldinclude Aud, Bowles, Brewer, Clark, Knott, Moore, Newton, Norris,Payne, Raley, Shercliffe, Wheatley, Wimsatt, and Yeates."

The introduction was written by Brother Thomas W. Spalding, C.F.X ,Spalding College, Louisville, Kentucky.

"Thomas Jenkins, son of (father unknown) and of (mother unknown) ,born 1640 in Anglesea, Wales; died 1727 in Poplar Point, Popes Creek,Mary land. He married 1669, in Jamestown, James City County, Virginiato Ann Spaulding. Thomas Jenkins, won of William Jason Jenkons, wasborn in 1640 at Lyn Green Castle, Anglesea, Wales. William JasonJenkins, born in 1615, also at Anglesea, was married in London 1636,probably, to Frances Ogle, eldest sister of Sir John Ogle. I do nothave proof of this marriage, only a statement found in the Letters andPapers of Charles I, referring to a marriage between the Ogle andJenkins families during this period. It is generally accepted thatWilliam Jason Jenkins was the brother of Sir Lionel Jenkins, Secretaryto the Board of Admiralty, of the British Navy, under Charles I, whichgives some support to this presumption. Sir John Ogle was in theservice of Charles I, but no mention was made as to the office heheld.

"The Jenkins family, like the Brooke, Hatton, Neale, Tawney (Taney),Hill , Mitchell, Edelen, Clarke, Matthews, Boarman, and otherprominent families arriving in the Maryland Colony about 1650 andshortly thereafter, were adherents of Charles I, who was beheaded in1649. Many fled England, leaving their wealth, but were quicklyaccepted into the early Colonial society through marriage and/orrecognition of their English social standing. Some, like the Brooke,Neale, Boarman, and Hatton families managed to bring a substantialpart of their wealth. Thomas Jenkins, the Maryland Progenitor, firstarrived inMaryland in 1658, as an indentured servant. He apparentlyserved his time as a Mariner of some sort, for he left and entered thecolony a number of times during which time, he met up with AnnSpaulding of Virginia. Her grandparents, Edward and MargaretSpaulding had moved from that Commonwealth into the Maryland Colony in1642, evidently leaving some of their children in Virginia. In 1670,Thomas Jenkins migrated with his wife, Ann Spaulding, from Virginiaand settled along Popes Creek in Charles County. By 1680, he was inpossession of Poplar Point which had many additions before his deathin 1727."

"The following account of the life of Thomas Jenkins, of CharlesCountyis taken from a monograph, THE GENEALOGY OF THE JENKINS FAMILY OFMARYLAND FROM 1664 TO 1895. It was published anonymously butauthorship is clearly claimed by Mrs. Michael (Isabella PlowdenJenkins) Jenkins, who dedicates the book to her cousin Ambrosia(Jenkins) Faxon whose help, she says, was invaluable. Actually, cousins who had copies of the book and who remember when it waswritten, told me that Ambrosia Faxon did the whole thing by herself. She is now recognized as the author. It was privately published byMichael Jenkins of Baltimore in 1906. A copy is in the DAR Library,Washington, DC. The following account on the life of Thomas Jenkinsis probably all based on tradition but it may be correct, since theauthor was his granddaughter and had ample time and opportu nity tolearn all about it from her father, her uncles, and her Aunt Matilda(Jenkins) Semmes. The author, however, goes astray in tracing theancestry of Mrs. Mary (Neale) (Corry) Jenkins, the wife of CaptainThomas Jenkins. I shall not waste time on this as it has already beendone very well by Mr. Harry Wright Newman in THE MARYLAND SEMMES ANDKINDRED FAMILIE S, beginning on page 305, a work published by theMaryland Historical Society in 1956 and based on the monumentalresearches of Raphael T. Semmes of Savannah, GA. Mr. Semmes, agrandson of Captain Thomas Jenkins' daughter Mary Matilda, retiredfrom his hardware business about 1904 and devoted the last ten ortwelve years of his life to genealogical research into the Catholicfamilies of Maryland from which he was descended, such as Semmes,Green, Neale, Boarman, Jenkins, and others. The Maryland HistoricalSociety in Baltimore has his notes. I have made extensive use ofthem.
There is, however, very little in Semmes' Jenkins material on thedescendants of William Jenkins (94) of George (91) of Thomas (97). Ithink he was just getting ready to work in this field when he had aheart attack that forced him to stop all his activities. I have someletters he wrote to my father in 1914 about Captain Thomas Jenkins andWilliam (94) his father. Thomas Jenkins of William was always calledCaptain Thomas Jenkins in his own lifetime, officially, and since thenby his descendants.
It is a convenient was of referring to him, since of all the ThomasJenkinses in our family, he alone is called Captain.
Thomas Jenkins, son of William and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Jenkins ofCharles County, Maryland, was born January 18, 1751. In early life hefollowed the sea in the employment of the firm of Dangerfield, largelyengaged in commerce, of Alexandria, Virginia. When the proper age, heengaged in business for himself and established a large tobaccobusiness at Port Tobacco, Charles County, and became the owner of manysea-going vessels.
When the Revolutionary War broke out, he ardently espoused the causeof
the colonies and employed all his ships in bringing supplies to theProvince. In 1778 he commanded in person the large ship "Potomac" on avoyage from the West Indies, loaded with arms and provisions for theuse of the Maryland patriots. When almost home he had the misfortuneto be captured by the British fleet, then off Cape Henry at the mouthof the Chesapeake Bay. Inasmuch as he was personally commanding hisown armed ship, which he was operating without the protection of aCommission from the Government, the British considered him anindependent privateer; that is, pretty much of a pirate, and wereinclined to hang him. His life was probably saved at this point bythe intervention of his friend and neighbor, General Smallwood, who threatened to hang an English captain that he had captured if theBritish hanged Thomas Jenkins. Because of this, and also because theycould not prove any actual piratical acts against him, the Britishagreed to treat him as a prisoner of war and he was taken to New YorkHarbor and imprisoned in the notorious prison ship, "Old Jersey."After nine months of close confinement
in this pestilential prison, he was paroled and put ashore to die of amalignanat fever contracted on board. However, his strongconstitution helped him to overcome the fever and he succeeded inescaping to his friends in Maryland. Soon after his return he wasexchanged for the British Captain still held by General Smallwood. The Contenental Government then offered him the command of a largeship of war then being fitted out at Alexa ndria, but on account ofthe impaired state of his health, he was forced to decline.
A few months after his return, on August 12, 1780, he married Mrs .Mary (Neale) Corry, the widow of Benjamin Leslie Corry of CharlesCounty . Mrs. Mary (Neale) Corry was born January 6, 1759. Herfather was Richard Neale of Charles County. Her mother's name isunknown (JS: Elizabeth Boarman); She predeceased her husband and isnot named in his will. Richard Neale died in 1772 and Mary and herbrother, Henry, were raised by her father's sister Theresa (Mrs.Raphael Lancast- er). Mary's brother Henry Neale died young , so sheinherited the whole of her father's estate in Charles County. Herfather, Richard Neale, was the son of Henry Neale (1691-1743), the sonof James and Elizabeth (Lord) Neale of Charles County who married MaryGardiner, daughter of John Gardiner and his wife Mary Boarman, wholater married Robert Slye.
Full details about these and all the rest of Richard Neale'sancestors, back to the original pioneers, can be found in theabove-mentioned THE MARYLAND SEMMES AND KINDRED FAMILIES, by HarryWright Newman. (Maryland Historical Society, 1956), beginning on page305.
After their marriage Captain Thomas Jenkins and Mary (Neale) (Corry)Jenkins settled down on their plantation, "Cobb Neck," near PortTobacco in Charles County, where they spent the rest of their lives."Cobb Neck" appears to have been a Neale property. They had tenchildren, two of whom died in childhood. They had at least fifty-twograndchildren. The Societies of the "Sons" and the "Daughters of theAmerican Revolution" recognize the outstanding service of CaptainThomas Jenkins to the Revolutionary ca use; his descendants areeligible for membership.
Mrs. Mary (Neale) (Corry) Jenkins died December 8, 1812. Capta nThomas Jenkins died November 14, 1821, survived by his six sons, andtwo daughters. The date of his death is given by Ambrosia Faxon whoprobably got it from her father, Lewis A. Jenkins, Captain Thomas'son. It is also given in the extant family Bibles of Captain Thomas'sons Henry and Felix. It is also given in two obituaries. HenryJenkins bible (copied from his father 's) also gives the names of allof Captain Thomas Jenkins' children, and their birthdays, death days, marriage days, and names of husbands and wives . The names of thechildren given in Henry Jenkins' bible agree with those named byCaptain Thomas Jenkins in his will. His will can be found in the Hall
of Records at Annapolis but the dates are wrong. Somebody made amistake
copying it into the "Will Book" a hundred or more years ago. I triedto find the original copy, but was unsuccessful. The dates given onthe will say that it was written March 20, 1822, and probated May 21,1822. ( It is found in Liber HB No. 14, Folio 196) In it ThomasJenkins mentions his sons Henry, William, Felix, Benedict, Frederickand Lewis A. Jenkins and daughters Elizabeth Jenkins and Mary MatildaSemmes. He directs that the home plantation should be sold and themoney divided among his children, the girls getting two parts each, the boys, one. He names his son Lewis A. Jenkins as executor anddirects that he consult with Thomas A. Davis and John J. Jenkins,Esquires, in settling it. John H. Lancaster, Michael Boarman,
and Charles I. Lancaster, are witnesses. The will was probated at theFeb. term of the court in 1822, (i.e. before it was written, accordingto the dates). He also leaves fifty dollars to the Cobb Neck Church. He left an estate valued at about fifty thousand dollars, besides theplantation. This was big for those days. The estate included manyslaves who, according to his granddaughter, Ambrosia, were either setfree then or distributed among his children to be set free when ofage. All the slaves are listed by name, with their value, in theinventory of the estate. (A few of them are marked worthless.) Heand his wife are buried at St. Thomas' Church,

See THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND 1670, pg 47: "Thomas (Jenkin), born
March 17, 1808, Nelson County, KY.; died May 28, 1817."
There is an inconsistancy between the date of death provided by Fr.
Jenkins and the following quote from an article printed in the HISTORY
OF UNION COUNTY KENTUCKY, 1886. Evansville, IN. FHL 976.9885 H2h at pgs
238-240. The article is a biography of the son of Thomas Jenkins (76)
brother John Robert Jenkins (62) named John Thomas S. Jenkins (64):
"Having finished his (John T. S. Jenkins) education, he went to Louis-
ville and entered the drug house of Thomas E. Jenkins & Co., his father
being a partner. Thomas E. Jenkins was the leading partner, and was
a chemist and druggist of pronounced and acknowledged ability" and
"having severed connections with the Louisville firm, of which his
father (John Robert Jenkins) and uncle (Thomas Jenkins) were partners."
It is apparent that Thomas, the brother of John Robert, must have
died after about 1860 since Dr. Jenkins was born Mar 5, 1842 and had
completed his premedical education prior to joining is uncle and
father in the pharmaceutical business. See notes under Dr. John
Thomas S. Jenkins, (64).

See THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND 1670 by Edward Felix Jenkins, O.S.A .pg 49:
"THOMAS COURTNEY JENKINS - He was named after his father's brother ,Thomas
Courtney, who died at Long Green at the age of 33, in 1757, unmarried, leav-
ing his fine estate to his brother Michael. Among the many descendants of
Michael Jenkins (1567), the name Thomas Courtney Jenkins has always been
considered a name of distinction, and it still is so considered today, two
centuries after the death of its original bearer.
"Thomas Courtney Jenkins was born at Long Green, Baltimore County ,Feb 18,
1765. He and his brothers were all educated at a neighboring school ,and he
used to tell how, during the Revolutionary War, the schoolmaster armed all
his boys with corn stalks and drilled them every day after school. Since his
father's farm was not big enough to support his five sons, the four older
sons, Thomas Courtney, William, Edward and Michael, all went to Baltimore
City when they reached the age of 18 or 20. God certainly blessed their
efforts because they all became rich and prominent businessmen and the found-
ers of families noted for their loyalty to the Catholic Church. Thomas
Courtney Jenkins was in Baltimore in 1785, and by 1795 the four brothers
were there. They all fought in the Battle of North Point. Thomas Courtney
retired from his business early, devoting himself to the tranquil pursuits
of private life.
"On January 23, 1806, he married in Baltimore by Bishop Carroll, Eliz-
abeth Gould, (Citing the Baltimore American, January 25, 1806) the daughter
of Oliver and Mary de Bion Gould, of Arcadian descent. Tradition ha sit
that the name Gould was originally de Bion.

!NOTES:
From THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND, 1670:
"...It is certain that William was a son of Thomas and Ann Jenkins .Thomas
left one half of a farm called "Pye's Hard Shift" to his son William. William
Jenkins, of St. Mary's County, left the same tract to his son, Ignatius, at the
same time enumerating all his other sons. This agrees with the lis tof
brothers enumerated by Thomas Courtney Jenkins of Baltimore County i nhis will
of Sep 30, 1757, probated Nov 1, 1757. William Jenkins married abou t1718 Mary
Courtney, who was probably born in 1696. These dates make her 22 an dWilliam
35 at the time of their marriage, and that would make her 45 and hi m58 in 1741
when their last child was born. She was the daughter of Lt. Thomas Courtney of
St. Mary's County and his second wife, Mary, possibly the widow Strong. Lt.
Thomas Courtney was born in St. Mary's County, the son of James Courtney who
came to Maryland in 1637, and died in St. Mary's County in 1642; an dwho on May
23, 1639 there married Mary Lawne.
"William Jenkins owned land in Charles, St. Mary's, and Baltimor eCounties.
...William and Mary (Courtney) Jenkins had six sons and two daughters: Joseph,
William, Thomas Courtney, Mary, Jane, Henry, Michael and Ignatius.
(Note that Jenkins book has Thomas born in St. Mary's County and th eother
citation has him arriving on the Ark and Dove in 1635.)

!NOTES:
THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND 1670 by Edward Felix Jenkins O.S.A., p g28:
"WILLIAM JENKINS - b. ca. 1721. It has been said that both he an dhis
brother Henry went to KY to live about 1740. This is very unlikely ,as in
1740 KY was an unexplored wilderness swarming with hostile indians .The
great Catholic migration from Maryland began about 1785. I think William
Jenkins lived in St. Mary's County all his life with his wife, whos ename
was probably Elizabeth. In 1761 Henry Jenkins and William and Elizabeth
Jenkins witnessed the will of John Rhodes in St. Mary's County. Henry
Jenkins was William's brother, aged 19 or 20, and probably not married yet.
The will of William Jenkins dated July 9, 1789, and probated in St. Mary's
County, November 17, 1789, mentions six sons and three daughters. The ab-
stract of the will that I have does not refer to the widow at all. The acc-
ount of his estate filed in St. Mary's County by William Jenkins, th esur-
viving executor, on December 10, 1793, mentions four of the sons an dthe
three daughters, and while it does not name the widow, it does refe rto her.
(See proceedings of Orphan's Court (1771-1801) p. 222. Citing Will 1795, St.
Mary's County, L.J.J. No. 2 Folio 150, Leonardtown, MD.
Children (Jenkins):
i. Jeremiah, married and had one child, Lewis Jenkins. The acco untof
Jeremiah Jenkins, late of St. Mary's County, deceased, was fi led by
Thomas Ford and Ann, his wife, April 15, 1794. It mentions t he wid-
ow and son, Lewis. The estate, after debts were paid, amount ed to
184/27/20, one-third of which went to the widow, the rest t o Lewis.
Jeremiah was dead when the account of his father's estate wa s filed.
This may be the Lewis Jenkins who married Elizabeth, and wh o died at
Conewago, PA, April 18, 1823, survived by a widowed daughter- in-law
was nee Clemence de Beelen, daughter of the Baron and Barones s de
Beeleen, of what is now Belgium.
ii. Ignatius, not mentioned in the account, presumably dead.

vii. Elizabeth, unmarried, December 10, 1793.

BIRTH:
VITAL RECORD OF RHODE ISLAND, 1636-1850, Births, Marriages, andDeaths, Kent County, by James N. Arnold. FHL 974.5 V2a Vol 1. Pg 184,citing Records of Kent County, Bk 3, pg. 169: Jerauld, Candace, May3, 1810.

NOTES:
The proper spelling of the surname of Candace is Jerauld. It will befound spelled many ways. The official entry of her marriage in PoseyCounty, Indiana, spells her name Jerald. Her son William Edward Stonewas baptised on July 1, 1878 at the age of 48 and her name is spelledon th e church record as Gerald.
The 1850 US Census of Taylorsville, Spencer County, Kentucky, showsher birthplace as Rhode Island. The 1860 census record shows herbirthplace as Indiana. The former is correct. Candace is thegranddaughter of a physician and a great-granddaughter of a physician. Her father's occupation is unknown. She was obviously named after heraunt who was born in 1790. She came to Indiana from Rhode Islandsometime about 1820. He was not found in the 1820 census for Indiana. We do not know whether Candace's mother was alive at this time butwe do know that her father, Edward Gorton Jerauld, married MaryWheatcroft in Indiana in 1826 when Candace was 16 years of age.Within three years, Candace had married Robert Stone in Posey County,Indiana.

to Captain a company in the State's Battalion of Continental Troops under

!CENSUS:
1810 US CENSUS, WARWICK, KENT COUNTY, RI., p 64, Edward G. Jerauld,
10010-00100. Edward was 28, Sophia was between 16-26, and Anson was
almost 2. Candace, born May 3 of that year was not included.
A check of all eastern, midwest and southern states for 1820 did n ot
reveal a single Jerauld or Jerald except James Jerauld, Edward's uncle,
still living in Warwick, R.I. There was no Edward with any spellin gin-
cluding Gerald etc. We believe that he was in Indiana by the time of
the 1820 census but do not know for certain. In 1820 a Henry Jeraul dis
shown in Patoka Township, Gibson County, Indiana, with his family. He is
one year younger than George Jerauld who was also living in Patoka Town-
ship. Since Henry was born in Indiana about 1817-1819, it is quite likely
that he is a brother of George and Christoper. Christopher was born
in 1816 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island, just prior to the Jerauld
family selling its land and, presumably, leaving for Indiana.

deed from Thomas Rice and Rosanna Rice, his wife, and William and Matlet Rice,
his wife, dated April 29, 1813, to a lot in Warwick "in that part near Assonog

Bounded Northerly on Highway Easterly on Lot Number 16 upon which th eMeeting
House Stands Southerly on Highway Westerly on Lot 14 as will appear by the
original plat of the said Division ---." The deed was recorded May 16, 1813.

!NOTES:
He and his father sold off their land in 1817 and his sister Phoeb eAnn
Jerauld was married in Gibson County, Indiana in 1819, and his brother Dutee
Jerauld was married there in 1824 with Sylvester following several years la-
ter. He himself was remarried on January 21, 1826 in Posey County, IN., near-
by. It seems likely that most of the family moved to Gibson County near the
end of the decade before 1820, else they would have been in the census for
the State of Rhode Island. Apparently, when Candace was a still a child,
her mother either died or her parents divorced. We know that Edwar dwas
married to Mary Wheatcroft in Posey County, Indiana, on January 21, 1825.
If the move was made before 1820, Sophia was probably still alive an dthe
family moved in tact. We will look for proof of Sophia's death.

Laura 11 and Perindia, 7 are found in Gibson County. Living with them
is Elly Jerauld, a male age 77 years born in Rhode Island. It is unknown
who this is. However, this would indicate a birth year of 1783 whic his
the same year that Sylvester Tiffany Jerauld, the brother of Edward G. Jerauld,

See WARWICK LAND EVIDENCE RECORDS, Book 13, p 266 (FHL 925470) for
deed from Caleb Gorton of Warwich in the County of Kent, State of Rhode Is-
land to Gorton Jerauld "of said Town, County and State" for three hundred and
seven dollars of a residence and barn on two acres on the road from Providence
to Greenwich. Deed dated "this twenty fourth day of march and in th eTwen-
tieth year of the Independance of America, AD 1796."
See WARWICK LAND EVIDENCE RECORDS, Book 15, p 228 (FHL 925471) for
a deed from Gorton Jerauld, MD. of Exeter in the County of Washington, State
of Rhode Island, to "Edward G. Jerauld my son of Warwick in the County of
Kent, State of Rhode Island" of a small lot in Warwick "adjoining whereon my
house stands", for $50.00 dated the 2nd day of March, 1808. (photocopy)
See also op.cit. Book 16, pg 314 (FHL 92571) for a deed from Thoma sRice
and Rosanna Rice, his wife and William Rice and Maplet Rice, his wif edated
Apr 29, 1813 to a lot in Warwick "in that part near Assonog (?) and is Number

of the said Division---." The deed was recorded May 16, 1813.
See also op.cit. Book 16, pg 592 for a partition agreement and dee dbetween
Gorton Jerauld and his brother Caleb Jerauld to devide their inherited land
from their father Dutee Jerauld who died during or prior to 1813. This agree-
ment describes their father's property and their proportionate shares. (The
copy is faint and quite difficult to read. Incidentally, it is the last
document in Book 16.)
See also op.cit. Book 17, pg 77 for a deed from Gorton Jerauld "o fSmith-
field in the County of Providence and the State of Rhode Island, fo rand in
consideration of the sum of Three Hundred Sixty-six Dollars" received from
Clarke Gorton deeds "Two Certain Lots of Land Situate in said Warwic klying
"on the Road leading from the fulling mill to East Greenwich Northerly on
land of Caleb Jerauld, Easterly on the sea or salt water and Southerly on
land of the home of Randall Rice and containing about one acre more or less."
The other is situate on the west side of said road with that of a Dwelling
house thereon standing abutted and bounded as follows beginning at the north-
east corner of said lot of Caleb Jeralds line running westward by said Caleb's
line (the balance of the description is difficult to decipher). Thi sparcel
contained about 7 acres and both parcels seem to be the inheritance from
his father which he partitioned with his brother Caleb (see above).
Deed dated 18 April, 1816.
See also op.cit. Book 17, pg 260, a deed to Jonathan Niles et al dated July
26, 1816. This document (difficult to read) begins "Know all men b ythese
presents that we Gorton Jerauld of Smithfield in the county of Providence
and Phebe, his wife in right of his wife (sic) Edward G. Jerauld of Warwick
in the County of Kent and William Jerauld of said Smithfield for an din
consideration of the sum of Seven Hundred Dollars in hand paid by Jonathan
Niles and John R. Waterman both of Warwick receipt of which is acknowledged"
deed property in Warwick, the description of which is obscured. Th edeed
is signed by Gorton, Phebe, Edward G. and Sophia Jerauld. It was recorded
October 20, 1817.
See also op.cit. Book 17, pg 263, a deed to Clarke Gorton to sixte enacres
the description of which is essentially illegible. The deed commences "I
Gorton Jerauld of Smithfield in the County of Providence and State o fRhode
Island and Providence & Plantations Physician, send greeting." The form
provides a blank space for the price as follows: for and in consideration
of the sum of___________________________in hand..." The words Hundred Dollars
are written in before the printed words 'in hand' with a blank spac epreceed-
ing the word Hundred. It appears that the price was not properly completed.
The deed is dated Oct 15, 1817 and was recorded Oct 25, 1817.

!PROBATE:
See PROBATE PROCEEDINGS, WARWICK, KENT CO., RI; (1804-1820); (FHL 925450);pp 402,405. On page 402 appears the following:
"Whereas Gorton Jerauld for want of Discretion in the Management o fhis
affairs is Likely himself and family to want and misery whereupon this
Court Decrees that Elizha Brown be and he is hereby appointed Guardian of
the said Gorton Jerauld and that the Clerk grant him a Letter of Guardianship
on his giving bond in the sum of $1,000. Edward Jerauld allowed to be Bonds-
man."
On page 405 appears: "Decreed by the court that Elisha Brown be an dhe
is hereby Discharged as Guardian of Gorton Jerauld no Bonds having been given
and that the Decree of this Court Adjudging the said Gorton to be Indiscreet
to be Repealed." While no date appears on either order, an order o npage
407 is dated February 23, 1816.

!NOTES:
It appears that Gorton Jerauld suffered some sort of disability i n1816.
Elizha Brown asked that a guardian be appointed over Gorton which petition was
later dismissed for want of a guardian's bond being posted. The following
year Gorton and Phebe sold the balance of their real estate holdings ,most
of which was inherited from Gorton's father, Dutee Jerauld, after hi sprobate
in 1813. We are unable to locate the family thereafter though in deeds
which Gorton executed in 1817, he states that they are "of Smithfiel din
the County of Providence." A search of the records of Providence County
is in order. In 1820 Gorton Jerauld would have reached 68 years of age.
Perhaps the difficulty which he experienced in 1816 related to his physical
health resulting in his death prior to the taking of the 1820 census.

In the 1850 census he is enumerated next door to his "uncle" Sylvester and
it is to be noted that he has a son named Sylvester. It is also noteworthy
that Henry Jerauld lives in the same township of Patoka with George Jerauld.
We assume, without verification, that George and Henry are brothers .It is
noted that Henry was born about 1817-19, shortly following the birt hof his
brother Christopher in Warwick, Rhode Island. The fact that Henry i sshown
as being born in Indiana indicates that it was in 1816-19 that the family moved
from Rhode Island to Indiana.
