Records of Kent County, Bk 3, pg. 169: Jerauld, Candace, May 3, 1810.
!NOTES:
The proper spelling of the surname of Candace is Jerauld. It wil l be
found spelled many ways. The official entry of her marriage in Pose yCounty,
Indiana, spells her name Jerald. Her son William Edward Stone was ba p-
tised on July 1, 1878 at the age of 48 and her name is spelled on th echurch
record as Gerald.
The 1850 US Census of Taylorsville, Spencer County, Kentucky, show sher
birthplace as Rhode Island. The 1860 census record shows her birthpl aceas
Indiana. The former is correct.
Candace is the granddaughter of a physician and a great-granddaugh terof
a physician. Her father's occupation is unknown. She was obviously n amed
after her aunt who was born in 1790. She came to Indiana from Rhode Island
sometime about 1820. He was not found in the 1820 census for Indiana .We do not know whether Candace's mother was alive at this time bu t we doknow that her father, Edward Gorton Jerauld, married Mary Whe atcroft inIndiana in 1826 when Candace was 16 years of age. Withi n three years,Candace had married Robert Stone in Posey County, Indi ana.

!MILITARY:
Dutee Jerauld began his military career in Oct 1776 as a member o f the
1st Regiment, Rhode Island Militia, Second Batatalion Field Officer u nder
Capt. William Tew as a 2nd Lieut. By Feb 1776 he was a 1st Lieut. i n the
2nd Bat. under Capt. Christopher Dyre. By May 1981 he had been promo ted
to Captain a company in the State's Battalion of Continental Troops u nder
Lt. Col. Commandant Jeremiah Olney. In May 1782 we find, p 414 of TH ECIVIL
AND MILITARY LIST OF RHODE ISLAND V1 (FHL 974.5 N2s) the following en try:
"State's Continental Battalion: Capt. Benjamin L. Peckham, in room of
Dutee Jerauld, resigned, from June 22nd, 1782."

!MARRIAGE:

County, Indiana Marriage records, pg. 107, for marriage of Duter (sic)
Jerauld and Ruth Ann Walters on Sep 1, 1824.
.spouse: Baker, Sophia (*1782 - )
!MARRIAGE:
Married (1st) to Sophia ---, before 1806. No proof found. Presumed
to be married in Kent County, Rhode Island since he was born there and
all of their children were born there.
Married (2nd) to Mary Wheatcroft, Posey County, IN., Jan 21, 1826.
See Posey County, IN Marriage Records, Indiana Source Book, FHL 977.2D29h,
Vol. 2, p 185.
!CENSUS:
1810 US CENSUS, WARWICK, KENT COUNTY, RI., p 64, Edward G. Jerauld,
10010-00100. Edward was 28, Sophia was between 16-26, and Anson was
almost 2. Candace, born May 3 of that year was not included.
A check of all eastern, midwest and southern states for 1820 did n ot
reveal a single Jerauld or Jerald except James Jerauld, Edward's uncl e,
still living in Warwick, R.I. There was no Edward with any spellin g in-
cluding Gerald etc. We believe that he was in Indiana by the time of
the 1820 census but do not know for certain. In 1820 a Henry Jeraul d is
shown in Patoka Township, Gibson County, Indiana, with his family. H e is
one year younger than George Jerauld who was also living in Patoka To wn-
ship. Since Henry was born in Indiana about 1817-1819, it is quite likely
that he is a brother of George and Christoper. Christopher was born
in 1816 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island, just prior to the Jera uld
family selling its land and, presumably, leaving for Indiana.

!NOTES:
He and his father sold off their land in 1817 and his sister Phoeb eAnn
Jerauld was married in Gibson County, Indiana in 1819, and his brothe rDutee
Jerauld was married there in 1824 with Sylvester following several ye arsla-
ter. He himself was remarried on January 21, 1826 in Posey County, IN .,near-
by. It seems likely that most of the family moved to Gibson County n earthe
end of the decade before 1820, else they would have been in the censu sfor
the State of Rhode Island. Apparently, when Candace was a still a ch ild,
her mother either died or her parents divorced. We know that Edwar d was
married to Mary Wheatcroft in Posey County, Indiana, on January 21, 1 825.
If the move was made before 1820, Sophia was probably still alive an d the
family moved in tact. We will look for proof of Sophia's death.

George Jerauld and his wife Nancy and their three children, Mary 17,
Laura 11 and Perindia, 7 are found in Gibson County. Living with them
is Elly Jerauld, a male age 77 years born in Rhode Island. It is unk nown
who this is. However, this would indicate a birth year of 1783 whic h is
the same year that Sylvester Tiffany Jerauld, the brother of Edward G .Jerauld,

See also op.cit. Book 17, pg 260, a deed to Jonathan Niles et al dated July
26, 1816. This document (difficult to read) begins "Know all men b ythese

is signed by Gorton, Phebe, Edward G. and Sophia Jerauld. It was reco rded
October 20, 1817.
See also op.cit. Book 17, pg 263, a deed to Clarke Gorton to sixte enacres
the description of which is essentially illegible. The deed commence s "I

Island and Providence & Plantations Physician, send greeting." The f orm
provides a blank space for the price as follows: for and in consideration
of the sum of___________________________in hand..." The words Hundre dDollars
are written in before the printed words 'in hand' with a blank spac epreceed-
ing the word Hundred. It appears that the price was not properly completed.
The deed is dated Oct 15, 1817 and was recorded Oct 25, 1817.
!PROBATE:
See PROBATE PROCEEDINGS, WARWICK, KENT CO., RI; (1804-1820); (FHL 925450);pp 402,405. On page 402 appears the following:
"Whereas Gorton Jerauld for want of Discretion in the Management o fhis
affairs is Likely himself and family to want and misery whereupon this
Court Decrees that Elizha Brown be and he is hereby appointed Guardia n of
the said Gorton Jerauld and that the Clerk grant him a Letter of Guardianship
on his giving bond in the sum of $1,000. Edward Jerauld allowed to b eBonds-
man."
On page 405 appears: "Decreed by the court that Elisha Brown be an d he
is hereby Discharged as Guardian of Gorton Jerauld no Bonds having be engiven
and that the Decree of this Court Adjudging the said Gorton to be Indiscreet
to be Repealed." While no date appears on either order, an order o n page
407 is dated February 23, 1816.
!NOTES:
It appears that Gorton Jerauld suffered some sort of disability i n1816.
Elizha Brown asked that a guardian be appointed over Gorton which petition was
later dismissed for want of a guardian's bond being posted. The following
year Gorton and Phebe sold the balance of their real estate holdings ,most
of which was inherited from Gorton's father, Dutee Jerauld, after hi sprobate
in 1813. We are unable to locate the family thereafter though in dee ds
which Gorton executed in 1817, he states that they are "of Smithfiel d in
the County of Providence." A search of the records of Providence Cou nty
is in order. In 1820 Gorton Jerauld would have reached 68 years of a ge.
Perhaps the difficulty which he experienced in 1816 related to his physical
health resulting in his death prior to the taking of the 1820 census.

this marriage and too young to have married Lucy.

!NOTE:
In the 1850 census he is enumerated next door to his "uncle" Sylvester and
it is to be noted that he has a son named Sylvester. It is also noteworthy
that Henry Jerauld lives in the same township of Patoka with George Jerauld.
We assume, without verification, that George and Henry are brothers . Itis
noted that Henry was born about 1817-19, shortly following the birt h ofhis
brother Christopher in Warwick, Rhode Island. The fact that Henry i sshown
as being born in Indiana indicates that it was in 1816-19 that the family moved
from Rhode Island to Indiana.

William Jerauld is shown as residing in Gibson County though no furth er
information is available.
US CENSUS OF 1820, Knox County, Indiana, District 089 lists:
William Jerrell 010110 10010 (Showing William [born 1793] as 26-44
with one male between 10-15 and another 16-25. Females are between 26 -44
and one less than 10. This William Jerauld would have been 27 in 1820
so the older male youth certainly was not his son and the younger one
probably not. These could have been nephews or helpers. Knox count y is
adjacent to the north of Gibson County. James Jerrell is also enumera ted
in Knox County District 089 in the 1820 US Census.
The US CENSUS OF 1830 FOR INDIANA lists no Jeraulds. However, th e US
CENSUS OF 1840 includes William Jerauld living in the Princeton distr ict
of Gibson County, Indiana. Males are under 5, 1; 5-10, 1; 10-15, 1;
40-50, 1; females 5-10, 1; 40-50, 1.
!NOTES:
Since no other Jeraulds have been located in any census records for
1820 in Indiana, it is tempting to conclude that William was the first
member of the family to move from Rhode Island. However, it is appar ent
that other members of the family have earlier historys in Indiana. F or
example, his sister Phebe Ann Jerauld was married in Gibson County o n Oct
14, 1819.
