In the name of God Amen, I Courtney Askin of the county of Breckinridgeand state of KY, being sick and weak in body but of sound mind andmemory, considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of thetime there of and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and therebybe better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to callme home, do therefore publish this my last will and testament in mannerand form following -- That is to say First and principally I commit mysoul unto the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth to bedecently buried and after the expenses of my last sickness and burial anddebts are paid I devise and bequeath as follows - 2nd -

It alsoappearing that the advancement made to the younger heirs of CourtneyAskin amounted to the sum of $12.16. The propertion to which each of theheirs is entitled there being seven now living (James Askin havingdeparted this life) amounts to $429.33.

It is therefore ordered and decreed that the defendant, John Askin pay toHenry T. Seaton & wife the sum of fifty-six dollars and 86 cents.
That said executor John Askin pay to Thomas Askin the sum of twenty-fivedollars and 35 cents.
That said defendant John Askin pay to George L. Askin the sum of Twohundred and sixty-three dollars and ninety-nine cents.
That said defendant John Askin pay to Hermin McCullough & wife the sum often dollars and 88 cents.
It is further ordered and decreed that Charles Hawkins pay to thedefendant John Askin the sum of two hundred and seventy dollars and 31cents and that Thompson Green pay to the defendant John Askin the sum offifty-four dollars and 59 cents.
The executor is allowed nothing for his services in settling said estateand is not charged with the notes of Flanagan & Mcclarty not the notes ofHaynes & Flanagan. The court being of the opinion that his management ofthe estate has not been of such characters as to entitle him tocompensation. The last mentioned notes have not been collected by theexecutor ande are not taken into this settlement but remain in the handsof the executor for the benefit of the distribution and devises under thewill of Courtney Askin.
There is also in the handws of the executor not taken into thissettlement the sum of one hundred dollars to meet a decree of AnselmWatkins obtained in this court and any other expenses which may comeagainst the executor -- and it is decreed that any balance of said _____which may remain in the hands of the executor after paying said decreeand any other costs, expenses which may come against him as executor maybe retained by him for his services in attending to suits against theestate.

First I bequeath my soul to Godthat gave it me and my body to the earth to be decently buried as myloving shall see fit -- Item - I give and bequeath unto my loving wifeRebecca Askin four hundred acres of land lying and being in CharlesCounty near unto Maryland Point to her and her heirs to have and to holdforever. It is also my will that my loving wife shall have the use of myplantation that now I do live upon while she is a widow and after sheshall marry then to be delivered up to my son John Askin and his to useand none other person to have anything to do with it but she shall havetime to finish the cropp and to remove her goods with peace andquietness-- Ite4m - give and bequeath unto my loving son John Askin theother half of my personal estate to him forever and lastly I do appointmy loving wife and my loving friend Mr. James Patison to be my executorsof this my last will and testament to give unto my body such decent andchistian buriall as they shall see fitting my will is that Mr Patisonshall have the power to look after my son John Askin estate that havegiven unto him and if that my son John Askin should die before he shallcome to the age of one and twenty years that then the plantation shall besold by my loving friend Mr James Patison and given by him to the poorestof the Roman Catholics in these parts where I do live and also the restof his estate to the poor.

John left home at a very early age. His parents didn't know where he wasand hadn't heard from him according to their wills (1749)
He joined the military in Virginia and was in the war between GreatBritain and France (French and Indian War). For this service he receivedBounty Land issued to him from The Augusta Co., VA court 19th Oct 1779.He then assigned this land to Francis Long for value received. (A MDneighbor?)

On 19 Oct 1762 John bought from William & Mary Gladin 300 acres of landin Fairfax Co., VA, for eighty pounds current money and one thousandthirty pounds of tobacco. (Is probably when he got back in contact withhis family. Fairfax County, VA and Charles County, MD are very near eachother on opposite sides of the Potomac River)

John's wife must have died between 1778 and 1796 when their last childwas born and John died. There is no mention of her in any documentdiscovered to date.

All of his (known) children were mentioned in his will.

Her maiden name is stated as Askin in one article in a book publishedby Perrin, Battle and Kniffin (See citation under her daughter in law,Malinda Stone) and as Erskine in another article published in the samebook (See THE STONE FAMILY reproduced in notes for William Stone). Anexcerpt from the latter article states "The Erskines were also fromEngland, and settled first in Maryland. They were people of wealth, andwere devout Catholics." I prefer Askin in view of the fact that her sonRobert's middle name is Askin (and his son Robert's middle name isJerauld after his mother's maiden name.)

Birth and death information came from the grave marker in theStone-Brown Cemetery in Nelson County, Kentucky.

A CD #208 pg 156 states "Mary Askin died 2 Sept 1767 in Charles County,MD. Her executor is Rebecca Askin. Kindred are Elizabeth Askin andThomas Luckett." Our Rebecca was born in 1774.

SP p. 2623:
"Alice Caroline Badger was born on April 26, 1909, at Central City,Nebraska. She was married and
had a child; she was married (2nd) to John L. Melgaard in September 1934.They are known to have
had children, but we have no further information."
