THE SPALDING FAMILY OF MARYLAND, KENTUCKY AND GEORGIA FROM 1658 TO 1965
by Hughes Spalding, 929.273 Sp18sg V.1.2 pg 19:

"Robert Abell, brother to Alethaire Abell Spalding, had led his own and a group of other Catholic families to the Rolling Fork in 1788 (in Nelson County, Kentucky). He had prospered and was the leading man in the community.

"Robert Abell represented Nelson County in the General Assembly when Kentucky was a part of Virginia, and when Kentucky became a state in 1792; and when Washington County was carved out of Nelson County in the same year, he was one of the first Justices for the new County and represented it in 1795 and 1799 in the General Assembly of Kentucky. He represented Washington County in the first Constitutional Convention and was the only Catholic in that body.

"Benedict Spalding, Jr., was fortunate to have such a prominent and respected brother-in-law for his sponsor."

THE SPALDING FAMILY OF MARYLAND, KENTUCKY AND GEORGIA FROM 1658 TO 1965,
by Hughes Spalding, 929.273 Sp 18sg v1.2, FHL, pg 19:

"Benedict Spalding, Jr., was the oldest son of Benedict and Elizabeth Mattingly Spalding. He was born in Maryland in December, 1746, and died in Kentucky August 1, 1815. He married Alethaire Abell, daughter of Samuel and Eleanor O'Bryan Abell, about 1769. She was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland, about 1749, and died in Kentucky in 1821."

See THOMAS JENKINS OF MARYLAND, 1670 by Edward Felix Jenkins,O.S.A., pg 39-40: "In 1770, Benedict Joseph Spalding m. Alethea (Alethaire) Abell, who was b. ca. 1753. These two dates are from the COMPENDIUM OF AMERICAN GENEALOGY, Volume V, page 557. Alethea Abell was the daughter of Samuel and Eleanor (Bryant) [O'Bryan] Abell of St. Mary's County. Mrs. Eleanor (Bryant) Abell was a devout Catholic, while her husband was a zealous Protestant, and High Sheriff of St. Mary's County. It is said that he was content that she should rear the girls in her religion but wanted the boys reared in his, and was very much annoyed when, inspired by their mother's
piety, they all became Catholics too. Tradition tells us that he was received into the Catholic Church before he died."

See CATHOLIC FAMILIES OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND by Timothy J. O'Rourke , p 53, for births of Samuel, Robert and Abner recorded at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Leonardtown, Maryland. Extracts were of families who were presumed to be Roman Catholic. The complete parish records were published by the St. Mary's County Historical Society in their bulletin "Chronicles."
